God is the Perfect Supreme Person – The ultimate Creator
God of the Bible, is the Perfect Supreme Person, the ultimate Creator. God is the primary and the most supreme level of personal existence. The Theophanies or the revelations of God are the manifestations of God Himself, limited to a particular time and place, for a particular purpose. Such God revelations are equal to God for all practical purposes. Each theophany or God revelation has functional distinctions. But for the sake of clarity in epistemological understanding, it is conceptually possible to differentiate between God and His various revelations of Himself.
The Creator-creation difference is all about the difference between the inherent substance of God and the outward oriented expressed energies of God. The revelations of God such as trinity and Jesus are the manifestations of the very substance of God. Oftentimes we know about the essence of God because we experience His energies, just as we know the sun through its rays. The divine energies denote the self-manifestation of God through His actions. God does not create the world from His essence, but by His energies. The creation does not manifest God’s substance but only His attributes.
God is infinitely far greater than what we can ever even imagine. No name can fully contain God or adequately express His nature. Let us not oversimplify God. God is infinite and transcendent. He exists entirely and infinitely distinct from and beyond the boundaries of the material universe. After knowing everything about God, no creature can ever believe in God. You can only believe in God based on the available revelation of God in the most authentic historical book available to mankind, which is the Bible. Man cannot define the nature of God by mere human reasoning.
One has to rightly understand the Character of the one true God and the reality of His revelations. The existence, nature and the future destiny of everything else solely depend on the character of God. The Bible reveals God’s character to man. Hence, in order to avoid committing mistakes in understanding the Bible, one has to relate every passage to the character of God. Without keeping God and His true character right in front of our mind, and relating everything to His character, we cannot understand anything correctly. Anything can have true meaning only in relation to the person of God. God is the point of reference of all things. Hence, the denial of God leads to the loss of meaning. Knowledge and information disconnected from the character of God can only have a killing effect on the person.
Love is the key to understand the character of God. God is love. But love is not God. All things are of God. But He did not keep all things for Himself. He did not keep even Himself (Jesus) from us. God does not change His character of being the true and the righteous one. God is perfect in every way. He does not need to change to become more perfect: “For I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3: 6a; Romans 11: 29; 1 Peter 1: 25; James 1: 17). But God’s response toward mankind may change in response to a change in the persons (Ezekiel 18: 21-24).
Glory is the summation of all the infinite attributes of God. Even all the revelations of God to mankind cannot manifest all the glory of God. The glory of God is the only deserving purpose for which everything else, including the revelation of God, exist. “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Rev 4:11). “for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Col 1:16-17). “the Lord hath made all things for Himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil” (Prov 16:4). God created all things and deals with His creation in order to manifest His glory and to make them see His glory. Believers glorify God directly. The unbelievers, demons, devil and hell will be the eternal witnesses to the glory of God indirectly.
We cannot define God. We can only describe Him based on what the Bible says about Him. It is even impossible to exhaustively describe Him. We can only know God through his revelation. When we talk about the attributes of God we are talking about His character as is revealed by God. Failure to understand the true nature of God can cause us to worship false gods, contrary to His will (Exodus 20:3-5). The attributes of a thing are so essential to it. This is equally true of the attributes of a person. If a man were divested of the attributes belonging to him, he would no more to be a man. Because, these inherent attributes make him a human being. If we use these ideas to understand God, we shall find that His attributes belong inalienably to Him. His attributes are His perfections, inseparable from His nature. Hence, denying His attributes is denying God.
The infinite attributes of God are the essential characteristics of God. A name does not define the person. What defines a person are his essential attributes, not his name. Denying one essential attribute is to reject the person. The almighty invisible God is understood by His interrelated attributes. Not even one of them can be rejected without modifying the others. All religions use the same generic word God. But the attributes of these gods differ. Their God views are totally different. Hence, they are all talking about different entities. There is only one true God. But many are falsely thinking that their false god is the true God. The Bible reveals the true God and the true attributes of God.
No attribute of God functions at the expense of another attribute. The attributes of God are mutually balancing and inter-related. We can only describe God. God is greater than the sum of all his attributes. We know His attributes only from His self-revelation. His mercy is mingled with His justice. His power is as infinite as His knowledge. His irresistibility is equal to His longsuffering. So is the love and wrath of God. God never violates any of His attributes in order to exercise another attribute. Hence God cannot love and forgive at the expense of justice. Because of His love God wants to help us. Because of His holiness He must punish sin. Because of His justice He cannot accept us unless proper sacrifice is made for sin. Hence God out of His love, sent forth His Son to sacrifice Him in order to quench the wrath of His holiness against sin.
God is infinitely perfect in Himself in all of His infinite number of attributes. God does not need to change to become more perfect. God does not need anyone or anything to be more perfect. Saving man from sin is a natural consequence of God's love, truth and faithfulness. God planned a salvation project in accordance with His character. God offered man eternal life and peace through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. God offered peace and holiness to man by His own holy blood. Holiness appears to occupy the highest rank among all His attributes. Because of His holiness He cannot accept, nor even look upon sin (Habakkuk 1:13). "ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy." (Leviticus 11:45). "and one cried unto another, and said, holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory." (Isaiah 5:16). But just as he who has called you is holy, you too should be entirely holy in your behavior. For the Scripture says: be holy, for I am holy. 1 Peter 1:15-16.
God can never compromise His perfect standards for any reason. Therefore, His commitment to condemning evil and rewarding good is inviolable. But even though we are sinful and by nature deserving His judgment, in His holiness God has nevertheless found a merciful way to justify us in spite of our sin without violating His character, namely, by judging His son, Jesus Christ in our place. God’s holiness is manifested in His righteousness.
God naturally rewards righteousness and punishes sin. Every sin of man is primarily against God. Because God is holy, He is righteous. He is no respecter of persons in the sense of showing favoritism. God cannot and will not pass over wrongdoing. God is the infinitely righteousness person. God is extremely uncompromising to sin. Hence, when our sins were placed upon Jesus for our sake, Jesus had to experience God's wrath and the righteous punishment of sin which is death. It is the infinite wrath of God against sin which causes eternal hell for the unbelievers. Corresponding is the infinite love of God and eternal life of believers. The only requirement God expects from man for heaven is to believe in His manifestation of love in Jesus Christ. The justice of God makes it impossible for God to let sin go unpunished. The justice of God in punishing sin is proven in the death of Christ. Thus, it is also proven that God justifies the believing sinners. (Rom. 3:26). In the sacrifice of Jesus, the Scripture was fulfilled which says: "mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other (Ps. 85:10).
Out of god’s righteousness came a righteous law with rewards and punishments. God’s justice is accurate, inescapable, severe and perfectly fair. God's character is good. It is the antithesis of evil. God is inherently good and always acts for the good. Evil does not originate from God.
God is the infinite and eternal person. But the self-reduced revelations of God need not be infinite and eternal. There was no time when God did not exist and there will be no time when God will not exist. He has no beginning and end. The eternity of God, also implies His self-existence. If God has existed forever, then His existence is self-existence. Self-existence is a mystery that is incomprehensible to man. But the denial of it would involve us in another greater mystery. Those who deny the self-existent God person, falsely assume that the present order of things came into existence out of nothing without the causal act of the creator. But the universe could not have been the product of mere energy. Because, energy originates either from matter or from a life-giving source. Science has proved that matter is not eternal. Hence, an eternal and self-existent person has to be the explanation of the present universe.
The King Nebuchadnezzar made some significant statements. "And at the end of the days, I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most high, and I praised and honored Him that lives forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation." (Daniel 4:34).
